The Heroine’s Journey of Debra Markowitz

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Writing the words in a screenplay which I then cast and watching the characters bring the words to life, is a joy I can’t even explain. Like watching your dreams take form and become real.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Being in nature, at peace, in perfect weather, or writing with my dog at my feet. Or being on set with people I love excited to create something wonderful together.
What is my greatest fear? Being lost and never finding my way back.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? My lack of sense of direction.
What is my greatest extravagance? Going on vacation – anywhere – which I rarely do.
On what occasion would I lie? This is the hardest question. It would probably be to save my life or that of someone I love.
What is the influence of role models, in my work and in my life? Since I created both the Nassau County Film Office and was one of the Founders of LIIFE, I would ask people advice, but didn’t really had a role model. Same with my creative endeavors in that I have a great creative team, but not one particular role model.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Raising money for films.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? Directing a film – any of my four so far – watching the characters give life to a role/movie. Watching their brilliance, I’m in awe of great actors, and being with a talented creative team knowing that you’re all creating something with love.
If I could, what would I change about myself? I’d love to have my waist back 🙂
What is my greatest achievement in work? Making a movie, Leaving, that teaches people a lesson and touches them.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Merrick Mountain, I walk there almost every day.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? I love quiet places, and vegetarian food. I want to say House of Dosas.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? John Marean, my fiance. Been
together for 10-1/2 years, and he’s so much fun, and yet also my rock and biggest supporter.
Whom would I like to work with in the future? John Cusack
What project, in the nearby future, am I looking forward to work on? SO many, My webseries, Couple of Guys, and feature films Porter’s Way and Damaged. but Not Broken. I guess the very closest is Life’s Calling which I’ll be directing for another writer.
