The Heroine’s Journey of Katrin Sophie Dworczak

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Working with artists. Being a part of the creative process. Setting up at art fairs – the excitement of the unknown outcome.
Organizing projects and exhibitions – the excruciating pain alternates with the feeling of pure happiness. Networking. Meeting new people. Traveling. Feeling like a global citizen (in and outside the art bubble).

What is my idea of perfect happiness? A great balance between my job and my  private life. In my case it intertwines which can be an advantage and a challenge at the same time.
But that is life – and life isn’t perfect. Happiness isn’t perfect. And that is great! Makes life way more interesting.

What is my greatest fear? That political situations will create an unfriendly environment for creative people in art & culture. Or for people in general. Injustice. I fear that!

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I don’t think I deplore anything really. Weaknesses are strengths and strengths are weaknesses as my fiancé keeps on saying to me. He is right.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? I do not want to choose a person but a profession. People who work in the field of art education are most of the time underpaid and underestimated.
One of my best friends works in that field and I admire her for her perseverance.

What is my greatest extravagance? Food. Travels. And artworks.

On what occasion would I lie? I am a very bad liar. So even if I wanted to tell a lie people who know me would detect the lie right away. I would maybe lie to protect someone I love from being hurt.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Creating a budget and sticking to it.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?  2013 – the first edition of my Street Art project Cash, Cans & Candy (made financially possible by my boss Ernst Hilger). It was a challenge but it was also very satisfactory. My team Vanessa, Anke and Niko and I created it all together. We made the impossible happen. We invited 50 inter/national artists to participate in an exhibition and to paint murals all over Vienna.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I would like to have a little more discipline. I can do it if I really have to but I wish it came more naturally.

What is my greatest achievement in work? My project Cash, Cans & Candy. Establishing relationships and friendships with inter/national artists, curators and people in the art and cultural field in general. Working hard to keep my promises. Running Galerie Hilger NEXT, HilgerBROTKunsthalle and project room@NEXT since 2013.

Where would I most like to live? I love my city – Vienna. I am a born and raised Viennese. But only because I studied and did internships abroad did I come to love my city.
Due to my travels for international art fairs in recent years I spent almost half of the year on the road. Which made me appreciate Vienna as my home base.
I am intrigued by other cities though – such as NYC, London to name only a few

What is my most treasured possession? One of my grandmother’s rings. And my art collection. Please don’t make me choose one, I love all of the works I bought or which were given to me as a thank you.

What is my most marked characteristic? I am curious and open minded.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Belvedere Garden which hosts the Belvedere Museum (Klimt, Schiele,…) and the Botanical Garden.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Mochi in 1020 Vienna – a great Japanese restaurant, run by an amazing team of people. Miranda Bar 1060 Vienna and Roberto’s 1010 Vienna.

What books influenced my life and how? Watership Town, Goldfinch, The house of spirits, Das größere Wunder by Thomas Glavinic, White Noise by Delillo.

Who are my favorite writers? Jonathan Franzen, Thomas Glavinic, Don Delillo,

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? The Soundtrack of my Life.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Wonder Woman – she has gone through so many changes, depending on the political situation.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My parents , my best friends and my fiance.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Casablanca

What role plays art in my life and work? It is my life and work.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My fiance, my parents and maybe even some friends.

Whom would I like to work with in 2017?  The Street artist Swoon.

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2017? Michel and Florence de Launoit, Alice van den Abeele and Raphaël Cruyt are the brains behind MIMA, the Street Art museum in Brussels which is unique in Europe.

What project, in 2017, am I looking forward to work on? Who knows maybe the  4th edition of Cash, Cans & Candy. Other than that – the upcoming exhibitions at the gallery.
For example working with great artists such as Simon Vega and Peterson Kamwathi Waweru.

Where can you see me or my work in 2017? I hope you will continue asking modern day heroines – everyday people with different backgrounds and diverse cultural heritage – about their adventures in life.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? You truly have to love what you do. Passion in a job or for a cause is the perfect drive to turn ambitions into actions.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story?
My local heroine suggestions would be:
Vera Steinkellner curator and artist manager https://verasteinkellner.com/
An artist such as Z – IG: dt801zs
Or Vasilena Gankovska (vasilena.gankovska@gmail.com)
