The Heroine’s Journey of Jenna Free

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love the connection I get to make with new women every day. These are generally women who are struggling with body image and being stuck in the diet cycle. I was there myself for 10 years so I know what a challenge it can be but I also know how to find freedom from it so I love connecting with those I can help.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? I believe there is no such thing as perfect happiness but I do believe that we can actively work on being happy each day. This involves practicing being present every moment (so much easier said than done), focusing on what we have instead of what we don’t and limiting comparison. And of course doing work you love and being with people you love.

What is my greatest fear? That I won’t be able to “have it all”. I genuinely know I want children and a big family but I also want to experience a lot of success and be able to help as many women as possible with the work I do. I know I will fill a void with one and not the other.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I am extremely impatient. This can result in rash decisions and mistakes!

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Of course Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resche who are the authors of Intuitive Eating which I base a lot of my work on. As well as Taryn Brumfitt from The Body Image Movement and the documentary “Embrace” for bringing self love and body positivity into the limelight.

What is my greatest extravagance? Travel! We are going to South Africa in the new year and going on a Safari.

On what occasion would I lie? When I think something is worth the money and someone else may not, I might fib on how much something cost!

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I can be home alone at my computer for a very long time. I’ve been known to not leave the house all day a few times a week and I love getting outside and being social so sometimes that can be a challenge.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I am the happiest when I am seeing new women join our program The Body Love Society and when we get to meet new private clients. It is so fun to know that this woman’s life is going to change drastically in the next six months!

If I could, what would I change about myself? Nothing, then I wouldn’t be me! (This is likely the self love and body acceptance work I’ve done so much of J ).

What is my greatest achievement in work? My greatest achievement is reaching out to my now business partner and dear friend Lauren McAulay and starting The Body Love Society program together. We are 10x stronger together than we ever were apart!

Where would I most like to live? I would like to live in Calgary, where I reside now but I would love to travel more often to warm destinations every couple months.

What is my most treasured possession? My computer! Without it my business doesn’t exist.

What is my most marked characteristic? I’m not sure about this one… I am pretty joyful and upbeat.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? I’m not going to lie, since starting my own business I probably see less of my own city but I do love a cozy coffee shop to work in.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? I love Famoso because they have the best pizza!

What books influenced my life and how? The book Intuitive Eating gave me framework to do the work that I do. You Are a Bad Ass is also a good one J .

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Country Music

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Tomb Raider – Angelina Jolie, not this new one that’s coming out. Love to see women conquering.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Anyone who does work in the body acceptance/ anti-diet world. It’s not easy to go up against diet culture every day when you get out of bed in the morning.

What role plays art in my life and work? I’ve actually got into painting lately and I love it. I have a class once and week and will likely be increasing that. I find it a very good way to be present in the moment and to take my mind off of work when I need to.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Lauren McAulay! This amazing woman has put her trust in me and gone on this crazy adventure in starting a business together (and she live in LA and I live in Canada). We didn’t meet in person until we were 6 months in already.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? Taryn Brumfitt!

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? I would love to meet Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resche and just have casual conversation over a few glasses of wine.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? We are so excited to launch our fourth round of The Body Love Society in February 2018!

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? You can find me at thebodylovesociety.com and http://www.instagram.com/thebodylovesociety

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? It means that even if my work doesn’t always look the way it does right now I will always be supporting and helping women find freedom in their bodies and who they are as people and I am so happy to have the priviledge of doing so in whatever way feels best at the time.

Which creative heroes and heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Lauren McAulay
