The Heroine’s Journey of Malika Mokadem

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Everyday is different! I never do the same thing, never meet the same people, never work in the same place….I get bored really easily and my work allows me to feel as if I had a different life every day.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Well, I am going to repeat myself but what makes me happy today may not be what will make me happy tomorrow…I will have to say freedom. Being free is for me the perfect happiness.

What is my greatest fear? I am scared to death of boredom…emptiness…I have no problem about being contemplative, lazy, alone. I guess my real fear is loosing desire.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I don’t trust myself enough, my brain takes control of my instinct. I overthink, always.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? Peter Lindbergh! Minimalism and truth. No artifice. The inner beauty shines through every time!

What is my greatest extravagance? Laughing too loud and often, not caring what people may think of me…

On what occasion would I lie? I don’t like hurting people…It is not real lies, more a way of deforming reality.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Having to explain what I wanted to say. I feel like I’ve failed. Things should be evident, clear…and then again, people should have the freedom to see what they want, let their emotions take over.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When an artist I love and respect asked for me to be the only one allowed to do his portrait. We have been working together for the last 10 years…

If I could, what would I change about myself? I wished I started photography earlier…

What is my greatest achievement in work?  I am still waiting for it!

Where would I most like to live? I would dream of eternal summer…a beach somewhere in Thailand.

What is my most treasured possession? I am not attached to anything material. I could move with really little…it will to be my freedom again!

What is my most marked characteristic? I am a clown. I love making people happy, laugh, smile….

What is my most inspirational location, in my city?  The sea, its mesmerizing changes, of color, shape, movement…

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? I spend a lot of time at Café Populaire, a great place for dining and drinking since its 2mns from my house.

What books influenced my life and how? Ha! Baudelaire, Les Fleurs du Mal. I am obsessed with darkness, melancolia, a sense of longing…

Who are my favorite writers? Edgar Alan Poe, Guy de Maupassant, Anais Nin….

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? David Bowie! Anything from Bowie….

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My daughter. She has such a healthy way to look at life, a great sense of who she is…and the freedom that comes with her age!

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Only Lovers Left Alive from Jim Jarmusch.

What role plays art in my life and work? Art is everything, estheticism is everything…I love living in a universe that makes me feel like I live in a book or a movie.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My husband!

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? Myself! I am starting a series of self-portrait…

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? Peter Lindbergh!

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on?  Continuing my collaboration with Côté Paris and discovering more amazing people and places to photograph.

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? You can come visit me at home…

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? Everything. I am an epicurean…passion leads my life. It forces me to find every day something that moves me, enthralled me…

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Dasha Yastrebova!

We’re sometimes not too sure how we get into good friendships. It seems to happen rather mysteriously: we talk of somewhat randomly ‘clicking’ with people. Trying to plan for it sounds like cheating. But in a busy world, the desire to socialise authentically, with interesting, like-minded people, deserves to be addressed directly.

That’s why we created The Heroine’s Journey Friends scheme. Membership gives you the right to invite creative professionals to publish their story for free on The Heroine’sJourney online. Each story made possible by you is anchored around the big idea that when we our quest let’s us travel from a person who interests us to another person who interest them and exchange stories we learn more about ourselves, meet people who can make a difference for you and have more impact in the world with telling our story.  Every month, in your own city or somewhere in the world you can invite creative professionals you like to tell their story for the Heroine’s Journey website.

If you have passion for your work, you will find kindred spirits in this way of travelling.  The stories you will see of creative professionals you have invited for The Heroine’s Journey are guaranteed to be stimulating and reassuring – as well as prompts to genuine connection and insight. Every creative professional you bring forward to have their story free published on The Heroine’s Journey online, you will be offering a great experience to everyone you meet.
