The Heroine’s Journey of Jen Lightfoot

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love when I get into the “zone” of drawing and it becomes a sort of meditative state. That’s one of my favorite parts of the creative process.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? This is a tough question. I don’t believe in perfection so I’m not really sure there is such a thing as perfect happiness.

What is my greatest fear? Dying because of a terminal disease or an accident.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? Feeling too afraid to try something different or new. Also, I am super clumsy lol.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? This is such a tough question. There are many artists that I admire and look up to. I don’t think I could narrow it down to just one or two! (Plus, I’d feel so bad if I left someone out accidentally!)

What is my greatest extravagance? Probably clothing or my CD collection… or eating out (I love trying new restaurants and dive bars!)

On what occasion would I lie? If I was planning something like a surprise or gift and didn’t want that person to know.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Probably the business side of things. I enjoy the marketing aspect… but I hate keeping track of receipts and expenses – the financial side of things I suppose.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I’m really enjoying the new pieces that I’m working on… I don’t think there’s ever been a time or place where I’ve been most happy with my art. It’s a process that has many ups and downs – that’s part of the beauty of it!

If I could, what would I change about myself? I’d be a little more outgoing. I love my introverted-ness… but I’d love to feel more at ease talking to people that I don’t know at art openings and events.

What is my greatest achievement in work? Probably my book, Little Nightmares. I really loved making it and using my graphic design background to create the layout and design. It was so exciting seeing it and holding it in my hands for the first time! I’m very proud of it.

Where would I most like to live? I’d love to move back to the Philadelphia area. I loved living there.

What is my most treasured possession? I know they’re not really possessions but… I would have to say my tattoos!

What is my most marked characteristic? My weird, quirky clothing style (I love goth and pinup fashion!)

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Probably the Herbert F. Johnson art museum … or the outside, back area of this bar called Lot 10 (mainly because it reminds me of living in a city… I’m surrounded by nature and woods, which I find boring and uninspiring lol)

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? I really like this place called Mia. I’m not sure it’s my favorite, but the food and cocktails are great… and I love the atmosphere!

What books influenced my life and how? I think the first books to really influence me would be 1984 or A Handmaid’s Tale, which I both read when I was in High School. I hadn’t read anything like them before and was blown away at the time. Also, I recently read musician Bif Naked’s memoir and found it really inspiring – it’s a wonderful book!

Who are my favorite writers? Chuck Palahniuk

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Music is a huge part of my life. I’d spend the day listening to Tori Amos, Marilyn Manson, Concrete Blonde, Ani Difranco, Garbage, Sisters of Mercy, Rasputina, Bif Naked, Lunachicks, Bat for Lashes, L7, Babes in Toyland, Switchblade Symphony … (my list could go on forever lol)

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I’m honestly not sure… but maybe Nancy from Nightmare on Elm Street. She’s such a badass and was one of the first girls to fight back in a horror movie.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My mom

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? David Lynch’s ‘Lost Highway’ – it’s so dark and uncomfortable to watch. I love it!

What role plays art in my life and work? I would be lost if I wasn’t able to create something.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Probably my partner, Tyler 🙂

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? I’d love to branch out and work with some new galleries. I’m very excited about the gallery shows that I do have coming up and working with the collective that I’m a part of, Strange Dreams Surreal Art Collective.

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? More creative people (artists, gallery directors, etc.)! I’d also love to meet in person the artists in the Strange Dreams Surreal Artist Collective!

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? Right now I’m working on four different pieces… so I’m very excited about those at the moment!

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? I currently have shows coming up at La Bodega Gallery, Future Gallery, and Thumbprint Gallery.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? That I’ll be making art when I’m 80! 🙂 I need art to survive… so I wouldn’t be able to retire.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story?
Jessica Perner, Kyra Wilson, Cori Bartz, Cora Crimson
