The Heroine’s Journey of Jessica Prando

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The sense of liberty and serenity that i feel while i’m drawing. When i draw, i’m complete relax, all worries
vanish, and i can express myself in the best way. It’s magic! And from here comes my motto: “Art is a little bit magic, just pick the pencil and cast the spell!”

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Me, my cats, a warm duvet, music and a book, or a film. Just this! Oh, and sometimes also a good tea, or an ice cream, depending on season.

What is my greatest fear?To fail. I work hard at every project / thing i do, so if i fail on it for me it would be almost tragic. I would feel indebted to myself, and it scares me, because i’m also very proud of myself, and something like that strikes me deeply.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? My determination, that could be sounds a little strange, but this determination, sometimes, leads me to follow paths, things or people, which are not good for me, and even if i know it, i do it anyway, because i transform that thing into a personal challenge. And sometimes it hurts, really hurts!

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
I admire a lot of artist, more or less famous. All that have follow his/her passion, because they know that is the right way. Two in particular have marker my path: Luis Royo, that was the start of all, i saw his amazing artwork when i was a teenager, and in that moment i decide that drawing and art would be my passion and life, and Manuela Soriani, that in a difficul moment of my life, when i was near to abbandon art, have share on FB a letter, where she described her feelings in a similar situation, and encourage any artist and people to follow their dreams. I felt very close to her experience, and i realized that don’t have to abandon that road, in fact i had to follow it, and i never regretted!

What is my greatest extravagance? The contrast between an ordered mind and a dreamer. I love to dream, travel with my mind and daydreaming, sometimes i can invent, produce and realized entire films in my head! But in meantime i need to programm all my days and thing to do, my mind neeed to see the “x” on “to do
list”, i’m a bird with a flight program XD

On what occasion would I lie? I don’t like lying, the truth is always the best way, even if it can hurt in some way. But if i’ve to lie i do it to make surprises, i love to surprise people to see their face!

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? Isn’t thing that i don’t like in my work, is the way that i have choose, but if i quote something, maybe is the
possible non-constancy of work, which can be fluctuating, but is a “risk” that i already knew, it’s part of the game, and basically i like the reserch job part.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I’m happy every time one of my works is published, whether it’s on a book, a game, a magazine, etc… I jump and sing all the times XD

If I could, what would I change about myself? Maybe the side of my determination that, as i describe before, leads me to a bad way, that in the end, hurts me.

What is my greatest achievement in work? When a client is satisfied with the job, when they told me that i’ve created the character exactly as had it in mind, or i’ve created a work as they have imaged it. That is the best part!

Where would I most like to live? In a home near a wood, with a lot of cats, and a very big personal library, always with a background music. And i’d also like to grow a garden with lots of herbs, and have a greenhouse full of flowers.

What is my most treasured possession? My books, without doubts! I’m a collector and a hungry reader, and my library is my treasure. I’ve a collection of fantasy books, as well, artbooks and illustrations books, thriller, japanese books, cooking books, dictionary, encyclopedias, manga, and magic books (yes, i’ve a passion for magic XD, not the show
magic, but the ancient one, with spells, potions, rituals etc.)

What is my most marked characteristic? The good side of my determination XD if i decide to do something, i don’t stop myself until i reach this goal, and my desire of knowledge, do research on anything that attracts my interest. Oh and also my little crazy side XD

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? An ancient villa in the city center. When i was a child i went every day to the old library inside this villa, which was decorated with frescoes and paintings on all the walls. I loved the atmosphere that was breathed inside, it was all very fascinating. Also the garden was, and is, magnificent, with ancient trees and columns, patio and gazebo. I always imagined that during the night come alive with fairies and sprites of the woods.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? An indian restaurant, “Taj mahal”. I like to experiment and taste food from all over the world, and the Indian
is one of my favorites.

What books influenced my life and how? My first fantasy book, “The mist of Avalon” by M. Zimmer Bradley. I read it when i was 12-13, and it opened to me a new world, i was thunderstruck by it. And from that moment on, the fantasy world become my obsection.

Who are my favorite writers? Two writers that have grown and formed me in adolescence: Marion Zimmer Bradley and J.J.R. Tolkien.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? My metal&rock playlist on spotify \m/ If you’re curious you can listen it here:

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? This is a difficult question, in general i love all female characters that have a strong and independent character, and with their strength and intelligence they go on and achieve their results. If i’ve to quote one in particular, she would be Phedre from “Kushiel’s Dart”, a novel by Jacqueline Carey.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? All people that can achieve their goals, with sacrifice and willpower.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? “The lord of the ring” trilogy. Even if you do not like the fantasy genre, it’s a film that impresses with the
magnificent work, the settings, the characters … one remains fascinated. It is impossible not admire the magnificence of the work, it is a small pearl of cinematography.

What role plays art in my life and work? Is all my life and work also! I love art, since I was a child. I have always visited museums and exhibitions, read books, seen documentaries and obsessed all those who know me XD for me art is a little bit magic, being able to put on paper own thoughts and own vision of the world, in a universal language that everyone can understand, is fantastic!

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? I’m lucky to have a family and friends who have always supported me and my passion for art, and this for me is the best fan, sponsor and partner in crime! My grandparents, in particular, have given me the love for art, music and books, and i’m grateful for this.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? I would like to be able to work for gaming and video game companies, especially in the fantasy field. I’ve always been fascinated by games and videogames, I’ve played with it, and I still play it, and I’d like to be able to work behind the scenes. Put my passion and experience at the service of this work, to give to others the adventures I have experienced in these years of play!

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? All artist friends who unfortunately are far away, but that every year, luckily, i can meet at various fairs of
comics and illustration.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? In this year i’m working on “Reminescence”, with my friend Cinzia Gentile, a fantasy card game, based on our original idea, of which we are realizing everything from illustrations to graphics, that we will launch with a kickstarter next year. And also i’m working on a project for my personal artbook.

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? Unfortunately for this year i’ll not participated in any fair or event, but you can follow my work on my FB page, instagram and on my official website

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? It means making choices, making decisions, to follow an idea, a desire, a passion. Rejoice and cry for those decisions, but always see that light, know that passion is always there, as a refuge,
a staple. Know that every time i pick up the pencil and draw, that decision makes me happy.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? Two friends and amazing artist, Manuela Soriani and Cinzia Gentile.
