The Heroine’s Journey of Omana Katzarska

What is the best thing that I love about my work? That it challenges me to grow professionally and personally. My field of focus and work is in Illustration, Book Design and Typography/ Type Design. They bring different traits of my personality to the surface and I hope my work helps other people.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Being happy and true to yourself. Spending time with your loved ones.

What is my greatest fear? Robot invasion and no human feelings. I hope we are smarter than that…

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? That I deplore, but I am working on myself.

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Those who respect themselves and the work of others. Those who know what they are doing. And not last – those who can inspire you, not make you feel self-doubt. Katsumi Komagata, Paula Scher, Jessica Walsh, Lorenzo Mattotti, Malika Favre and more.

What is my greatest extravagance? Drawing with my both hands and writing the other way around.

On what occasion would I lie? I think these days is more easy to lie than say the truth. So I try to stick with the truth and speak my mind. I wish that to everyone ( including myself ) – to be free to express what they are true about.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? That sometimes it is stressful. But that is part of the process. I am learning to cope with it.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When the work was hard and challenging, but the results were meaningful.

If I could, what would I change about myself? As I said before – I am working on myself. But I am glad that I had some lessons in my life that showed me what to work on.

What is my greatest achievement in work? Persistence.

Where would I most like to live? I love traveling! I feel so good when I do. But I am maybe an optimist and I enjoy also my own country. No matter how tough it might be. So maybe traveling to different places and staying there for a while, but knowing the roots. I appreciate where I came from.

What is my most treasured possession? Books and some beautiful handwritten letters

What is my most marked characteristic? Hardworking.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? The mountain Vitosha – when you want to clear your head and be near to the sky.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Some places. Come to Sofia, Bulgaria and explore for yourself.

What books influenced my life and how? Pippi Longstocking was one of my favorites when I was a little girl, because of her bravery and unconventional character. Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse was the book that made me thing about a lot of things. The book Re-Vision by my professor Stefan Gruev also made me revision the work and the meaning of it.

Who are my favorite writers? Ray Bradbury, Kurt Vonnegut, Scott Fitzgerald, Oscar Wilde and Andersen are the first that come to my mind. There are more.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? I still remember the feeling A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini brought to me. The women character Mariam was a true hero to survive through everything.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My parents and my sister. They are fighters and inspiration.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? I will recommend Brooklyn. That’s a story of a journey!

What role plays art in my life and work? The main role I would say. Pursuing my artistic path was encouraged, gladly.

Who is my geatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My family, my partner and the people I have a chance to work with.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? I am open to collaborations. It should be a two-way process.

Which people in my profession would I love to meet in 2018? I would love to meet Paula Scher! I was lucky to meet Katsumi Komagata and Beatrice Alemagna.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? The typeface I am working on.
