The Heroine’s Journey of Dagmar Renée Ritter

What is the best thing that I love about my work? Being an artist is a lifetime job of developing your skills of technique, ideas and recognition. There is always on one hand my status quo as result of that developing process and on the other hand there is also always a new aim. Seeing me never as finished or good enough there are many new goals to reach. It gives me an aspect in my future, a meaning of life, that makes me happy. It gives me the idea of a journey until I will die!

What is my idea of perfect happiness? Staying healthy with my dear loved humans and animals around me. Being able to make my creative work and not to great problems that they couldn’t be solved.

What is my greatest fear? Loosing my loved ones, seeing them suffering. Circumstances which make it impossible to make art. All that takes away the meaning of life for me!

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I think I’m in balance with my strong and my weak points! I don’t deplore a single trait of myself so much! But I sometimes wished I would be more business minded, that would make earning money a little easier for me. But I seem to be a hopeless idealist, because there is always that strong feeling in me, that great values like love, art, helpfulness and so on can’t be paid with currencies. That appears so much different to me. Money we all need to live and naturally it is great to be able to buy all the things you need. Also to have enough money for living and so have the freedom to produce art. But for the greatest values can not be paid!

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? There are so many, and some of them are also my friends, that I prefer neither only to mention a single one of them and make the others sad, nor writing very long list in order to bore you as a reader!

What is my greatest extravagance? I think it is my love for all mysterious and macabre things! Although I’m a very critical thinker, believing nothing that can’t be proved, I love all these mystery stories, movies, pictures, costumes, home decor and so on! I usually say: I´was born as a Goth, in a time when neither me nor the world knew what a Goth is! I never joined a Gothic-Community, maybe as an artist you are more the type of doing your own stuff alone in your artist ivory tower.

On what occasion would I lie? This is a very difficult question. Because between not being always impolite and telling your unrequested opinion and a lie is a big difference! I see it more the way that I try not to offend other people with spontaneous pronounced opinions. I better keep my mouth closed and not hurt anyone. I try to think about how it may look to see it through their eyes and with their life history. Often I come to the conclusion that they are also right, because they live under other conditions. So If you see it as a lie not to say non reflective what comes to your mind, then call me a liar!

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I dislike most the hate and the envy between artist colleagues. Why is it for so many artists not possible to admire the work of colleagues. There will always be someone working as good as one self or better. Why being jealous instead of learning from the others. Or why do so many artists not give a hint to a fellow artist to help him to develop his skills. I really don’t understand and I’m disgusted by this senseless envy!

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I´am, and I was always the happiest in my work, when I see and saw my ideas coming true in a new artwork and when I’ve new aims, ideas or techniques, in which I’m interested and I’m able to combine them to a new kind of artwork, which I couldn’t have done earlier!

If I could, what would I change about myself? I´would like to learn and develop faster than I do, because life is to short for all the things I would like to do!

What is my greatest achievement in work? It is always the newest success. Not every work is a satisfying piece. But if I finish a piece that brings me to a newer and higher level, it is always my greatest success!

Where would I most like to live? Somewhere in a dark old-fashioned building, as you know it from old school Dracula films! But I styled my place like a “Gothic Home“ so I’m very happy to live there and don’t search for another place!

What is my most treasured possession? Health, love, happiness and the ability to make art!

What is my most marked characteristic? I think nobody can tell his own marked characteristics, This is a thing we have to leave to the people who know us very well! But what I often hear is, that I’m more the Lily Munster type: looking spooky at the first sight but completely harmless and even friendly when you look closer!

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? There are many beautiful places, buildings and gardens in my home town Vienna. But as I mentioned before I feel the most cosy in my “Gothic Home Artist Ivory Tower“. Where I can think and experiment without being disturbed!

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? The same thing as before it is wonderful to visit beautiful places in Vienna, but I get my power of happiness by meetings with my loved ones, humans and animals. They are a small group, but so close to my heart, that the location is less impotent, than with whom you share your meal. This fact makes a normal day to a Holiday!

What books influenced my life and how? As a child I loved these legends with dark topics, as death, devils and monsters. But I also started early to love subject literature to learn many interesting things from it. I love “Faust“ from Goethe, as a German native speaker, I can find the music of language in his words. It makes modern language standing poor! But nevertheless there are great literature nowadays and I love to hear audio books while I’m painting! Good literature is a pleasure for me, the problem is you can’t read and paint at the same time! So audio books are very important for me!

Who are my favorite writers? I like books about philosophic or science themes and also fiction books. Only to mention some authors: Sebastian Fitzek, Patrik Süskind, Preston and Child as an author duo, John Katzenbach, Wolfgang Hohlbein and many, many more!

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Because I love different music styles of different centuries, from Classic to Jazz, to Rock, Hard Rock and dark heavy music. And in each epoch and style I have my favorites. So I would try to hear a mix up of as much of my favorites as possible. This is what I sometimes do!

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? There is no special one, but I like most there very old black and white honor movies. The strange atmosphere. As a child I loved to watch “The Munsters“ They were shown as original English version with German subtitles. These series inspired me as a lover of dark humor and also to learn English!

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? All persons who are standing up for human rights, who fight against racism. These who fight for giving animals the right for a better life. These who care for nature, these who don’t see only their own profit, these who are helpful and open-minded. All these wonderful People who try to make our world a better place and teaches us to become better humans with an open mind and an open-heart!

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? If you have read all my other answers so far, you know by now that I can’t stick only to a single great thing, I rather like to pick out the raisins of the cake. But I would highly recommend watching some of these old black and white horror, science fiction and thriller movies to feel this strange atmosphere of them, which can’t be found in the newer ones.

What role plays art in my life and work? Art is my life! As a child it was much more fun for me to be creative than to play games! When I was 15 years old I decided that my strength is fine arts! So I started this lifetime journey as an artist. It is the sense of my life.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My parents who make it possible for me to study painting and graphics at the academy, some of my teachers who helped me to follow my own way instead of trying to force me to do it their ways, my loved longtime companion he is an artist too, and all that people who are open-minded enough to even be interested in my work although it frightens them.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? I’m open for what is coming as commission work, exhibition or project! If the topic is interesting and the person gives me some freedom to bring in my own ideas and style, I will do my best to make it to an interesting experience and result!

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2018? People who inspire me and people who feel inspired by me. It is a game of give and take, that makes the professional art life so interesting!

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? First and foremost things, that I would have never expected to work on, this is always greatest. I also would like to make some more book and CD Covers and make new designs for more products with my art printed on them!
