The Heroine’s Journey of Neha Muthiyan

What is the best thing that I love about my work?

I work as a performer in Indian classical dance (kathak), founder-director of a dance school called Kathak Pathshala and as an editor-publisher of a dance e-magazine titled Loud Applause (www.loudapplause.com)

The best thing about my work is that I can set my own rules, my own schedules and juggle between them at my own pace. I can take the creative liberty while choreographing, dig deep through books while researching for an article, explore the tech world while designing the magazine and most important of all, meet new people and exchange thoughts and gain knowledge.

‘A pat on the back’ or ‘a word of appreciation’ for your hard work by that one person who you look up to.

To be out of ideas or work

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?

Which living persons in my profession do I most admire?

Firstly, my guru (teacher),Shambhavi Dandekar, for she is the person who can multitask, think clearly and passionately at the same time, guide her students to perfection without spoon feeding and be the ‘go-to’ person for a lifetime. Secondly, Mr.Ashish Khokar, a dance critique, scholar, historian and editor of ‘Attendance’ dance magazine. He is the most helpful person I have met and always ready to share his knowledge without any barriers. Lastly, I admire those dancers who try to expand their boundaries rather than break them.

What is my greatest extravagance?

Well, have not had one till now, but would surely want to travel and get the experience of the dance culture of different countries.

On what occasion would I lie?

When I am sure that it would bring a smile or a ray of hope and not hurt anyone.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?

Not having monetary satisfaction. Dancers are underpaid of what they are actually worth of. It sometimes becomes difficult to get a team of musicians for live performance due to payment issues. The issue that hurts me the most is when organizers demand money from dancers to perform and some dancers unfortunately fall prey to these practices and end up paying and performing.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work?

I was happiest when I was at the learning stage of my career under my guru. It was the most enriching time of my life where I just needed to follow what my guru says and the answers were automatically found! I believe that everyone is a student all his life but those experiences from the early learning years are the ones which we cherish for a long time.

If I could, what would I change about myself?

Have a more professional outlook while marketing and promoting myself as a dancer or the magazine or my students.
