The Heroine’s Journey of Iris Boss

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The best thing about my work as an actress is its versatility. I get to know many interesting people, and I have the opportunity to work in various domains, such as the theater, film business, television and sound studio. Moreover, I can experiment with completely different lives and personalities without having to fear the consequences that would results from this in the real world. The worst that can happen to me is to get a poor review. And what is more – I am an  adrenaline junkie; I love and need the sensation of adrenaline pumping through my veins, even after the many years of working as an actress.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? My vision of true happiness is to live without existential fears, amongst the people I love, and to be able to do the things I want to do, in whatever place this might be. The only thing missing is the necessary cash, plus a flat in Paris, one in New York….and perhaps a small house by the sea and a chalet in the mountains…..

What is my greatest fear? I have two greatest fears – one is to lose my freedom, and the other one is not to make the most of my freedom.

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? My self-doubts.

Which living persons in my profession do I admire most? Tilda Swinton, Charlotte Rampling, Isabelle Huppert. And all my colleagues who have not become cynical or even malicious despite the precarious circumstances we often have to face – i.e., those colleagues who practice their profession and craft with idealism, love and skill.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I realized that my new path of life as a free-lance actress was the right decision and that it was no mistake to quit my permanent engagement.

If I could, what would I change about myself? I am happy the way things are and do not really want to change anything about myself. I believe this would get in the way of the “natural equilibrium”.

What is my greatest achievement in work? To have been able to make a living from my work since 15 years.

Where would I most like to live? Everywhere where I am free, where I can work and where I can share my life with the people I love – as long as it is in Berlin!

What is my most treasured possession? My imagination.

What is my most marked characteristic? I have always been “untamed“ in a way. I like to be fully committed to what I am doing, rather than doing a half-hearted job.

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? It’s more a time than a place: The twilight hour, shortly before sunrise, when the city is empty and everything is magic.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? To eat: „Zum Mond“ in Kreuzberg. To drink: Almost every beach- and rooftop-bar in the city.

What books influenced my life and how? There are far too many to be mentioned here. I have been reading obsessively ever since I have learned to read. There are only a few people whose company means more to me than a good book. Among others, “The Power of the Actor“ by Ivana Chubbuck and everything written by David Mamet have greatly influenced my life as an actress.

Who are my favorite writers? Again, there are too many to be listed here. My most loved favorite writers are Dorothy Parker, Robert Walser, Haruki Murakami, Max Frisch, Richard Yates, Albert Camus, Joseph Roth, Heinrich von Kleist, Alice Munro and, and, and…..I cannot stop. My most striking recent discovery is “The First Stone” by the remarkable Danish author Carsten Jensen. Everyone should read this marvelous book!

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? The sound of silence and the voice of the person I love.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Ronia, the robber’s daughter, in the book with the same title by Astrid Lindgren.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? At present, my heroine is the young Swedish woman, Elin Ersson, who managed to prevent the deportation of an Afghan man by her courageous intervention. My aunt Silvia and my sister Stella – for many reasons.

Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? “Breakfast at Tiffany´s“ and “Invasion of the Body Snatchers“.

What role plays art in my life and work? The question should be: What role plays life in my art?

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? I don´t like fans. Worshiper is the least 😉 . Partner in crime is the man I love, and the sponsor is still wanted.

Whom would I like to work with in 2018? I am in the fortunate position to know already now with whom I will be working until the end of this year.

What project, in 2018, am I looking forward to work on? “The Crucible“, a play by Arthur Miller. In addition, I am looking forward to writing as much as I can. I have always written texts but have usually kept them to myself. Currently, I am publishing a blog and am in the process of completing my first book.

Where can you see me or my work in 2018? Until the middle of November 2018, I will be on tour in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with “The Crucible”.

What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? The undying hope that this is entirely true!
