What is the best thing that I love about my work? Speaking in general: the freedom to choose my own path. This way, I own both my successes and my failures and that is perfectly fine. With regard to writing: when I’m in the ‘flow’ and words just
seem to write themselves. That’s when I write my best sentences.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? Being genuinely content and grateful for everything that goes well in my life, enjoying the company of my family and friends and
experiencing wonderful human connectedness.
What is my greatest fear? Loss of a dear one.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? My tendency to be impatient.
Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Deepak Chopra, Martha Beck, Brené Brown, dr. Joe Dispenza, Lynne McTaggart, Neville Goddard, Bernie Siegel, Bruce H. Lipton, Gregg Braden, Wayne W. Dyer, Oprah Winfrey, Dawson Church,
Byron Katie, Elizabeth Gilbert.
What is my greatest extravagance? That I like to travel a lot.
On what occasion would I lie? In case this would be necessary for the safety and health of my significant other and children.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The editing process once the manuscript itself is finished. Going through each and every single word and sentence again, again and again is not my favorite part of writing. It is, however, a very necessary and useful part so unfortunately I, like any writer, have to kill a massive amount of my blood-sweat-and tears-darlings.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? During the presentation of my second book, The year of the owl, when my significant other had arranged, unbeknownst to me, that three real owls would be present. He held a beautiful speech and I got to hold the majestic eagle-owl on my arm. A very emotional and happy moment, especially because I was in the presence of all my dear family members, friends and acquaintances.
If I could, what would I change about myself? Nothing. I have the privilege of being 54 years young and being totally at ease and peace with myself. I feel whole.
What is my greatest achievement in work? Having published two books with esteemed publishing houses in The Netherlands.
Where would I most like to live? Where I live right now. I’m very, very happy and content there.
What is my most treasured possession? The owl statue my mother gave to my father many years ago as a symbol for his kind wisdom. After my dad died and I had an intense spiritual experience involving an owl, my mother gave me this statue so now it resides proudly in my living room so I can look at it every day.
What is my most marked characteristic? That I’m compassionate.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? My own cozy home.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? Italian restaurant ‘Il Giardino’ and tapas restaurant ‘Cafe Madrid’.
What books influenced my life and how? Whoa, so many!!! Where to start? I’d say ‘Feeling is the secret’ and ‘The power of awareness’, both by Neville Goddard because they tremendously helped me in preparing for an important operation in the best possible way. And ‘Finding your own North Star. Claiming the life you were meant to live’, Steering by Starlight. The science and magic of finding your destiny’ and ‘Finding your way in a wild new world. Reclaim your true nature to create the life you want’, all by Martha Beck. Because I started reading ‘North Star’ at a time in my life when I was searching for something that was missing and she put me on the right track, for which I’m forever grateful.
Who are my favorite writers? Deepak Chopra, Martha Beck, Brené Brown, dr. Joe Dispenza, Lynne McTaggart, Neville Goddard, Bernie Siegel, Bruce H. Lipton, Gregg Braden, Wayne W. Dyer, Oprah Winfrey, Dawson Church, Byron Katie, Elizabeth Gilbert, Chelsea Handler, Tina Fey, R.J. Palacio and many, many others.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? The kid in ‘Wonder’ by R.J. Palacio.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? Heroes are all the ‘ordinary’ people that daily help others live a better life and make the world a healthier, better, more beautiful
and safer place. My all time favorite heroine is Oprah, my all time favorite hero is Barack Obama.
Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? ‘Love, actually’ because it is warm, loving and funny. It always makes me feel wonderful, regardless of how many times I watch it. And ‘The Untouchables’ (‘Les Intouchables’) for the same
What role plays art in my life and work? A very important one, both activally and passively. I love the art of finding the exact right words to tell a story. And I enjoy reading or looking at the work of others, gaining fresh insights or going to a concert or ballet and having uplifting experiences of beauty, awe and wonder.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Undoubtedly my signifant other.
Whom would I like to work with in 2019? Oprah Winfrey and Deepak Chopra. I like to aim high :-).
What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on? I have several but the most important is to get my second book, The year of the owl, onto the international – and especially the American – market. I believe so firmly in the international potential of this book that I had it translated into English. This book was published in October 2016 by Kosmos, one of the most prestigious non-fiction publishers in The Netherlands. I deeply
feel that The year of the owl’s uplifting message of loving connectedness, consolation and wonder is the perfect antidote for the divisiveness, unease and indifference in the world right now. Next to this big goal, I also want to develop a webinar, give more workshops and publish a(n) (e-)book consisting of material that I have collected the last couple of years while investigating the power of the human mind.
Where can you see me or my work in 2019? I hope in every bookstore in the US, every airport in the world, on Amazon.com and in magazines and newspapers :-). If not, you can certainly meet me on my website https://pascalebruinen.com/en/ which has an English version, via FB, Twitter, Linked In and Instagram and via my workshops, webinar and (e-)books.
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? Everything! I live this slogan daily. On January 1st 2016, I quit my job as a prosecutor after 18 years in order to follow my writer’s heart. So I completely reinvented myself at the age of 52 and it was the very best decision I ever made. I’ve never been happier! Of course, I also had the same nagging and limiting fears like everyone else and at first they withheld me from taking this leap of faith. But thanks to the miraculous events involving an owl that happened to me after my father died (hence the title of my second book), I went through a total personal transformation. I took a journey from the head to the heart and managed to let go of all my fears and just actually did it. Therefore, I can really relate to
‘Passion never retires’. It keeps you young, inquisitive, eager, happy and open to new experiences. Ever since the story of the owl, I discovered: ‘On the other side of fear, lies freedom’. That’s my reason to write, give workshops and pass on my experiences and knowledge; to show others that it can be done!
Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? My fitness instructor, Lieveke van den Baar. A wonderful, inspiring and miraculous human being that has been through a lot but has risen out of the ashes of her past like a phoenix, helping,
uplifting and motivating others not only to get physically fit, but also to feel worthy.
And Toos Hofstede, an authentic crusader for sustainability that even managed to be trained by Al Gore. She is the epitome of a generation that wants to be real, sincere and committed, helping businesses to not only take measures for protecting the environment, but to actually make this an integral part of their lives.
