The Heroine’s Journey of Karen Stidham

What is the best thing that I love about my work?
I love the fact that I can tell a story with my artwork.  That why I love comicbooks so much. I can express myself more clearly thru illustration than I can with words. The only time that I am not story telling is when I do a strait up portrait.
What is my idea of perfect happiness?
My idea of perfect happiness  is having all my bills paid in advance with money in the bank. Be in good health and have someone to love. A house on about 4 ackers of land  with a seperate fully equiped studio and gallery to show my work
What is my greatest fear?
My greatest fear is being homeless.  I own the house I live in, but it need to be gutted, it’s  in need of many repairs. Waterheater burst in March of 2018, been taking cold showers since then.  Roof started leaking in June. Furnance died in November, been useing space heaters to keep the pipe from bursting. And last thete a lot of termite damage from an infestation about 20 years ago.  There is one wall were I can grab and crush the wall in my hand.  I have no money to make these repairs
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
Is to call people on their bullshit or bad behavior.  I keep making excuses for their bad behavior.  Thet I get fed up with them and I blow up and really lay into them
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
This is a hard one because most of who I admire are dead, artist like Jack Kirby, John Busema and Gil Kane are my top 3.  Most of the artist who worked at Marvel comic during the 60tys and 70tys. The ones still living are Neal Adams, Alex Ross and David Finch. There are so many great artist who work in comic, who don’t  get the credit they deserve  as just great artist in general
What is my greatest extravagance?
I really don’t have any, I am too poor to have any now. I just barely get by on my Social security disability of $980.00 a month. On any art job I take 1/2 upfront so I can afford the art supplies needed to do the job.  In the pass my extravagance were my comicbook collection and my 35,000 album record collection. Sold my comic off to pay bill and my album collection  got destory in a flood.
On what occasion would I lie?
I would lie when I or a love one was in danger, otherwise I try not to lie.  I have lost what I though were friend over not lying. If you ask me a question expect the truth as I see it.  You are responsable for you own emotion  and if you are offended by my answer, then that is on you and not me
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
What I dislike is rarely being completely satified with my work. There comes a point were you can sell a piece or you completely fullfill the needs of the client.  I also dislike not having the tool to do a job quicker and better.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
About 20 years ago, I did a portrait of Marilyn Monroe and was completely happy with the results, I couldn’t do any better and after the client had it professionally framed, when I saw it I was floored at how good it looked.  I though to myself no one could have done it better.
If I could, what would I change about myself?
I would never have taken the warehouse job were I hurt my back.  I caught a 400lbs sheet of 2 inch 4 x 4 Plexiglass to keep it from running down bare legs.  I heard a disk pop in my neck and felt 3 vertabrate  crunch in my lower back
What is my greatest achievement in work?
The before mention Marilyn Monroe portrait. I have done other art that was use on products and that gave me some achievement, but nothing like I had on the Marilyn Monroe portrait
Where would I most like to live?
I live now in a row home. I would like to live on a 4 acker plot of land with one side on a main road were I would have my studio and art gallery and then at the back of the land would be my house with a indoor 2 lane swimming pool.  This would be heaven for me
What is my most treasured possession?
My cats and famility and the one person I call a friend. My cats keeps me sane. They will all way do something to make me smile when I am down. The person who I call a friend is a lot like me. She accept me for who I am. She a truth teller and doesn’t lie to me. She puts me in my place when needed.
