The Heroine’s Journey of Helena Masellis

What is the best thing that I love about my work?
Creating a world based off written words.
What is my idea of perfect happiness?
Just being able to live off what I do.
What is my greatest failure?
Dropped out, for a good reason, and to continue would have been a complete waste of time, but I still beat myself up for it.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
I pretend much from myself and the people that surround me.
Which living persons in my profession do i most admire?
Definitely Stephane Levallois, both as a comic book artist and as a storyboard artist.
What is my greatest extravagances?
No idea, I’d have to ask my mother, she loves to point out these things.
On what occasion would I lie?
I think I’d lie to my parents about my work, but simply because after all this time they still don’t get what I actually do so they keep sending me job applications as a retailer or stuff like that (nothing against retailers, just, isn’t my gig).
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
I’d love it to be constant and regular, just like a 9-5 job, but instead I don’t have a start or finishing hours so I could go on till 4 am just because things need to be done, and that’s pretty stressing.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
I think conventions are the best part about this line of work, seeing people you are only able to talk online with, talking to readers about things they’d enjoyied (or hated) about  something I made. It makes you feel part of something bigger, seeing first hand the joy comics can give.
If I could, what would I change about myself?
My nose. Joke, I don’t know, nothing I guess, I like who I am and what I am right now.
What is my greatest achievement in work?
Well, I take being able to pay the bills by drawing as a constant achievement.
Where would I most like to live?
I’d love to go back to Brazil, definitely. More realistically, Germany.
What is my most treasured possession?
Right now, I think my iPad, just because with it i can draw anywhere (I think I have a problem haha).
What is my most marked characteristic?
I act like I don’t take anything too seriously, and I try not to, but its mostly acting stupid just because.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city?
For me, near my favorite church, Santo Stefano. The narrow streets, the piazza, the tiny bars, and the crunch’s itself are just the prettiest.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city?
Senza Nome, it’s a bar run by deaf/mute people and it’s simply amazing.
What books influenced my life and how?
I think the first time I spontaneously read an Agatha Christie book something changed, I was like 9 I think, I remember my mother loved them and I wanted to know why so I grabbed one at the library and devoured it in a day, then went on and by the time I was 13 I had read every one of her books.
As per comics, I think it was Noè, by Stephane Levallois, it was the work with which I discovered him as an artist, and it taught me that a single line has more power than a polished image, if you know how to make that line act as a complete character.
Who are my favorite writers?
There are too many writers I love, I can’t choose. It also depends on the category, there can’t be a favorite.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day?
Helena, by My Chemical Romance.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?
It depends of what you mean with this question, I mean my favorite super hero, as in “a character” is Wolverine, for a lot of reasons. If you mean an example for me I wouldn’t know how to answer properly, but with all of his faults, I admire Don Draper from MadMen.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?
There are some, but I’d rather tell them face to face. As per famous real life heroes, Gerard Way.
Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime?
Mirror Mask
What role plays art in my life and work?
Pretty fundamental I guess
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?
My sister.
Whom would I like to work with in 2019?
John Arcudi
Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2019?
Gabriel Bá e Fabio Moon, together or one at a time, it doesn’t matter I love em both.
What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on?
A personal project, which I can’t reveal yet, and I might be bias but I think it’s really great.
Where can you see me or my work?
In the best bathrooms around the world. Or the internet. Or like, comic book shops.
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me?
That a line of work like this doesn’t give you the chance to put away enough money to have a retirement plan so you draw or die. Joke, I think its more like, the physical need to create something even if it isn’t for the money, creating just because you want to and what not.
Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story?
Diana Naneva, Kalina Muhova, Lonnie Bao
How can you contact me?
Shout my name in the air, I will know.
