The Heroine’s Journey of Laura Lonni

What is the best thing that I love about my work? My work is very fulfilling, and for so many reasons! Obviously, It allows me to create almost everyday which is already awesome, but it is also very diverse: I can create an animation from scratch, illustrate, do some video-editing, vary the techniques, draw, use different softwares… There are so many ways to create an animation! And that means, you’re learning constantly. There is always something new to check out: new plugins, new scripts, new softwares… Finally,as a freelancer, you can combine this passion with other interests, like traveling, which is very satisfying.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? I guess it would be able to combine everything I like to do, and still be surrounded by people I love and encourage me. Another important point to me, is that my work actually helps people in some ways: that’s my main focus in the long term. Be happy yes, but if you can help doing so, it’s even better!
What is my greatest fear? To feel stuck, professionally or personally. To have goals, but not be able to reach them.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I may compare myself too much to other designers, which is actually sometimes also very motivating.
Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? I love the work of James Curran, which is very playful and colourful. That’s exactly the kind of motion design I relate to! I also admire Joey Korenman for his impressive career. He is an awesome and remarkable designer, but he also managed to help other freelancers by writing a book and even created an online school for motion designers. Thanks Joey, you’re so inspiring!
What is my greatest extravagance? I love traveling so much! It enables myself to work with awesome studios all over the world, and learn from every single one. I am very grateful for that.
On what occasion would I lie? Only white lies, to protect someone I care about and only if I have to. I am not comfortable with lying.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? The business side of it I would say, as a freelancer.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? During my year in Australia in 2017-2018. I met very talented and passionate people, who love talking about what they do and why they do it. I’ve learnt so much from them, and I like to think that I transmitted a bit of my values as well. I also managed to combine my work and my passion for traveling this year, it is invaluable.
If I could, what would I change about myself? Be more spontaneous. But I can’t be spontaneous if I think I have to be… Tricky one!
What is my greatest achievement in work? A project I’ve worked on in my full time job, back in London. Perfect Day, my agency at the time, worked on a campaign for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. I’ve created all the animations for this campaign, and they’ve been displayed in huge screens all over NYC & London, including Time Square! Why is it my greatest achievement in work? Because A, it is very rewarding for a motion designer to have his work displayed in such a huge scale and in a such emblematic place like Time Square. B, because the project was for Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and drew attention to the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, so a noble cause. It actually helped people. And C, celebrities such as Barack Obama, Will.I.Am, Stephen Fry or Justin Trudeau have been involved in the project.
For more information about it, have a look at my website:
Where would I most like to live? In so many places! I would say that the most important thing for me is living in a cultural city, but also have access to nature and wildlife in some extent. I love cities where you can discover new things and places everyday, connect with people, but it is important to be able to take a step back from that. I am a motion designer, but I am also a lover of life!
What is my most treasured possession? My values.
What is my most marked characteristic? I love connecting with people, designers or not. You can learn something from anyone. And I love sharing too.
What is my most inspirational location, in my city? I can find inspiration in all kind of places. Nature tends to inspire me the most though, especially places that look unreal like some national parks, reserves and canyons in the US or Australia.
What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? When I used to live in London, my favorite place was a cafe called Ziferblat which is very communal and social. I would go at least once a week. In Melbourne, I really like the Whitehart and Section 8 for the outside, and the Moroccan Soup Bar for the amazing food. In Sydney, I would say The Glenmore for its stunning view of the Opera House. The next city is to be defined!
What books influenced my life and how? Clearly “The Freelance Manifesto” by Joey Korenman that I’ve mentioned before. I like the way he sees the motion design field and how progressive he is. This book opens a wide range of possibilities regarding the future of the job. I listen to a lot of podcasts as well, on the Motion Hatch website ( or School of Motion (
Who are my favorite writers? I don’t have specific favorite writers. When I have nothing to read anymore, I like to go to the bookstore and ask the librarian for advice. Generally, I like books about travels and self improvement.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? Probably something melancholic, that reminds me of a happy period of my life. Weirdly, the first thing that comes to my mind is “Power of Love” by Huey Lewis & The News, the soundtrack of the trilogy Back to the Future, my favourite movies! That’s quite funny, I guess it reminds me of my childhood. Or maybe it’s because I’ve watched it again yesterday, who knows. Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Obviously, Marty McFly! He is brave, has great values and would do anything for his family and friends.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? People spending their lives to help others. People involved in great causes.
Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? Not really a movie, but I would recommend to watch the documentaries Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II, produced by BBC. The captured images are just stunning, and unfortunately also heart-breaking. For me, these documentaries are game changers to raise awareness on ecological matters.
What role plays art in my life and work? I need to create to feel good. It could be through anything, I just need to create. I’m lucky that my work actually CONSISTS of creating!
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My partner is very supportive. He is a creative developer so we’ve been working on a few projects together, so he’s probably my partner in crime as well!
Whom would I like to work with in 2019? There is so many talented studios out there! Buck, Animade, Never Sit Still, Gramm, Breeder, Dirty Puppet… It won’t probably be for next year though, but one day I hope! I’ll do my best for that.
Which people in my profession would I love to meet in 2019? This year it will be more France-oriented for me I think. French studios are super good in the creative field, and I never really had the occasion to work with France yet, which is a shame. I’ll be happy to connect with my compatriots!
What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on? I am always excited when I work on a creative project. So I guess all the upcoming ones!
