The Heroine’s Journey of Lilivet (Lily) Peña Echemendía

What is the best thing that I love about my work? What I love the most about my work is the possibility of creating a parallel world, a unique and unrepeatable reality with my hands and imagination. It is wonderful to see the transformation of a completely blank support to a new universe, a new beginning, there lies the essence of creation. Each work is like a child, something very yours, in a certain way all human beings have that desire to perpetuate their existence in time.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? The idea of perfect happiness is a very subjective concept in my opinion, only in view of those who know how to “see” what is really necessary. My perfect happiness is based on daily life with my family, my husband, in that balanced dynamic, and to be able to do what I love the most, to paint, just to do it, without thinking about whether I sell or not. On the other hand I think that its essence lies in the word “possibility”, that opportunity to be or achieve what you have worked for or worked so hard for.
What is my greatest fear? My biggest fear is lost time, I like to think that my existence has not been in vain, considering that all human beings die, but few really live. It terrifies me that time that passes without having achieved something, however small or humble it may seem. Every day I need to learn something new, create or just help others, being productive is a blessing from God.

What is my greatest extravagance? My biggest extravagance is to be a Doctor of Profession, as well as an Artist, because although well-exercised Medicine is also an Art, there is nothing further away.
On what occasion would I lie? Lying is a circumstantial act for the human being, but I am Christian by conviction and I can not imagine a situation that could lead me to lie, my ethical and moral principles do not allow it.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? It disgusts me in extreme, to see the mercantilism that surrounds the Art in these times, in another time if an Artist had talent alone it was enough that the right people were interested in their work to be able to achieve success, in the times that are running if the media does not Artist’s money, this one does not exhibit, less triumphs. I dislike the approach of Contemporary Art, where only the discourse interests, compromising the virtuosity and visual quality of the Work, without a doubt a new tendency has emerged: the Facilism.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? I have been the happiest person while I paint at home, during a day of great inspiration.
If I could, what would I change about myself? If I could, I would change that excess of childish ingenuity that still remains in me, it makes me have expectations of life and the behavior of others in disagreement with reality.
What is my greatest achievement in work? Being Cuban, I believe that the greatest achievement has been to be able to cross the limits of time and geographic fatalisms that surround me, to have so many followers of my work all over the world, which is the reflection of my thought. It is a pleasure and an honor for me, that other people enjoy my work.
