The Heroine’s Journey of Heloisa Cassanho

What is the best thing that I love about my work? I love when I get to see people wearing the clothes I have designed and I can see that they feel good about themselves.

What is my idea of perfect happiness? I think happiness is about feeling grateful for what you have. When you truly feel grateful (even for little random things) that’s where perfect hapiness is.

What is my greatest fear? I fear war and violence. I also don’t understand it. If we are capable to love, why would we do the opposite?

What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? I can be very anxious when a situation is not under my control. I turn to yoga and meditation to help me deal with that.

Which living persons in my profession do i most admire? I’m a big fan of Stella McCartney for she is able to join beautiful design and sustainability while promoting consciousness for great causes.

What is my greatest extravagance? Travelling. I’m always saving money, and whenever I have the opportunity, I spend it travelling… It’s a personal investiment!

On what occasion would I lie? Almost never, I’m terrible with lies. I can omit some information if it’s not necessary for someone else to know.

What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I think the fashion industry has to start moving to a more environmental and sustainable direction, and less consuming, less pollutive. Also, is about time that stereotypes change. You don’t have to be tall and thin to look good on clothes, you just have to feel good.

When and where was I the happiest, in my work? One time I designed a collection for mother’s day, and I didn’t want to use models for the photoshoot, so I’ve chosen real moms. At the end of the shoot one of them thanked me for she never had make-up and hair done before in her life, and she told me she felt like a princess. It was priceless to hear that!

If I could, what would I change about myself? Nothing, really. Mistakes and flaws are necessary for our growth,

What is my greatest achievement in work? I guess just to know that overtime I’ve learned how to manage a collection (from the sketch to the arrival of the product in the store) is a big achievement. Is not easy, and it took me years to finally feel confident enough to say that I’m capable.

Where would I most like to live? I have lived in NY, one of my favorite places in the world. Now I’m living in Barcelona, and I’m very happy. My plan is to stay in Barcelona for now, but who knows, there are so many places to get to know in this world…

What is my most treasured possession? Can people be considerated as possessions? I don’t think there’s anything more treasurable than the people we love.

What is my most marked characteristic? I think my determination. Sometimes, my indecision… lol!

What is my most inspirational location, in my city? Barcelona has both mountains and beaches, two wonderful options to feel inspired.

What is my favourite place to eat and drink, in my city? I really like local street food, any place with tapas and a glass of wine sounds good to me. There’s a street in Barcelona called Blai, with lots of restaurants like that. Also churros with chocolate, you find them everywhere!

What books influenced my life and how? There’s a book called Asanas and Lesions in Ashtanga Yoga, by yoga teacher Matthew Vollmer. I started reading it, thinking it would be about the body, but it actually touched very deep questions about our purposes and ego. This book made me re-think many things in life.

Who are my favorite writers? I don’t have one favorite author, but I’ve read lots of Agatha Christie’s books, since I was a teenager. I find them very entertaining.

You Only Die Once. What music would I listen on my last day? I would like to hear a mantra called Mangala, we chant when the yoga practice is finished. The last line says “May all beings everywhere be happy and free”.

Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Might sound silly, but I love Elsa and Ana from Disney’s movie, Frozen. There’s a nice message behind their story.

Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? I think everytime I see a person doing good deeds, helping others, loving themselves and showing love, they become a kind of hero to me. That’s what’s going to save the world.

Which movie would i recommend to see once in a lifetime? Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn. Is just adorable!

What role plays art in my life and work? A big role! Art is a wonderful way of expression that can bring us all kinds of feelings, and this is amazing. As a designer I find inspiration in art, and I try to translate that to each piece I create.

Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? I would say my sister. We get along so well, and she’s always there to give me advice, support, and pushing me for a better version of myself.

Whom would I like to work with in 2019?  I would love to work for brands that value environmental consciousness in fashion. I see many brands going in this direction, don’t have one specific in mind, but I would be pleased to take part in a project like this.

Which people in my profession would i love to meet in 2019? Stella McCartney, my muse!

What project, in 2019, am I looking forward to work on? I would love to develop a collection using recycled fabric.

Which creative heroines should Peter invite to tell their story? I would love to see my friend Evelyn Schiller sharing her story. She’s one of the people I admire for being so real!
