The Heroine’s Journey of Giulia Mattera

What is the best thing that I love about my work?
Performance art is an endless catalyst for change, an endless
treasure trove.
What is my idea of happiness?
Being at ease with any emotion or situation, embracing them
without judgement.
What is my greatest fear?
Abandonment.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself?
I hardly give myself a break.
Which living persons in my profession do I most admire?
Foremost, but not only, my mentors Linda Mary Montano, Marilyn
Arsem, Graeme Miller.
What is my greatest extravagance?
A concept of extravagance entails one of normality I hardly find
fathomable.
On what occasion would I lie?
I hate lies, maybe I would lie only in a life or death situation.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work?
I sometimes feel it requires a level of socialization beyond my
capacity as I am very much an introvert.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work?
It is more of a rollercoaster than a regular ascending line. That
being said, I am happy when surprised by new ideas and ways of
expression.
If I could, what would I change about myself?
I would love to learn to take things lightly.
What is my greatest achievement in work?
Surrendering to the fact that art is who I am. Showing my work at
DfbrL8r Performance Art Gallery in Chicago, and at Grace
Exhibition Space in New York City.
Where would I most like to live?
In the woods, probably in a Scandinavian country.
What is my most treasured possession?
Can something be a treasure and a possession at the same time?
What you possess possesses you- not my ideal definition of a
treasure.
What is my most marked characteristic?
I am brutally sincere.
What is my most inspirational location in my city?
The Pantheon, a former Roman temple.
What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city?
To eat Rumi Bottega Organica, with its delicious zero kilometer
vegan and gluten free products. To drink BumBum Bar Brasileiro, a
Brazilian tiny cocktail bar with yummy drinks with fruit. Both
places are in the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome.
What books influenced my life and how?
Hard to only pick some as I love reading and read tons, anyhow I
am going to mention a couple of titles. Aldous Huxley’s The Doors
of Perception, which I first read as a teenager, greatly opened my
mind to the idea of thinking outside the box. The Mysteries of the
Dark Moon by Demetra George is a sort of toolbox of repattering to
the moon’s rhythms.
You Only Die Once. What music would I listen to on my last day?
Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell.
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction?
The female characters in Hayao Miyazaki’s work- apart from their
central role in the plot, they are independent and their
indomitable spirit reaches the audience no matter their age range.
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life?
The people I love, who have shown me their superpowers for real,
first of all my grandma.
Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime?
Enter The Void by Gaspar Noé.
What role plays art in my life and work?
Art is everything- my life, my work.
What do the words ‘You are the storyteller of your own life’ mean to
me?
My life is my own responsibility.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime?
My family, my friends and my boyfriend.
Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2020?
SPILL festival in the UK, Ponderosa art space in Germany.
Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my
creative career would I love to meet in 2020?
Unexpected encounters are my favorites.
What project, in 2020, am I looking forward to work on?
I am currently specifically researching ecology through
performance art, which I am going to continue doing in various
events and festivals throughout the year.
Where can you see me or my work in 2020?
2020 schedule is a bit all over the places at the moment due to
the current worldwide pandemic- anyhow, you can keep an eye on my

updated.
