The Heroine’s Journey of Carlotta Candela

What is the best thing that I love about my work? The painting, the canvas, the colors, give me the possibility to express myself, with no filters. I love the fact that I can create what my mind suggests or imagines just using few objects. In a certain way, painting makes my thoughts real and this is a fascinating thing from my point of view.
What is my idea of happiness? For me, happiness is being myself, feeling free, painting, being with the ones I love, and why not? Even just the vision of a green hill with birdsong in the background brings me true happiness.
What is my greatest fear? My biggest fear is to see my dreams and the things I believe in crumbling, because when I set myself a goal I dedicate body and soul to it. Apart from the artistic meaning, this can also be seen in my affections.
What is the trait that i most deplore in myself? I think too much. So, most of the time, my chaotic mind transforms something small in something huge. I have been working on this trait for years and thanks to yoga and meditation I can say that it is almost solved.
Which living persons in my profession do I most admire? Generally I admire all the people who are part of the art world. The world of the art is not simple: you find everyday problems you have to fight against.
What is my greatest extravagance? I realized that I oscillate between two different versions of myself. That means that depending on the day I may paint or draw something full of colors and joy or my essence may move into something darker, which could be simply ink and a sheet of paper.
At the beginning I tried to fight that oscillation, but now I have decided to learn to live with it.
On what occasion would I lie? Since I hate lies, I try to avoid telling them. I don’t understand why people use them as I think that the lie turns into a big boulder on the conscience.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? What really bothers me is that art is usually underappreciated. People expect high quality works for a miserable price. I don’t understand why an artist should be seen as a worker.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? When I’m working I am always happy. Happiness drives me from the beginning (when the painting is just a thought) to the end (when the thought becomes reality).
If I could, what would I change about myself? Basically nothing, I‘ve worked a lot to improve and learn to accept myself.
What is my greatest achievement in work? Being always true to myself and seeing how those around me appreciate it.
Where would I most like to live? Since I was little my dream is to live in Paris.
What is my most treasured possession? The ones I love: my family, my partner, my pets, my paint brushes and friends.
What is my most marked characteristic? What the FOCK are you talking about???? The desire to make it happen. Even if it’s complicated I don’t get discouraged. I keep trying to find the best way somehow.
What is my most inspirational location in my city? Artena’s hills.
What is my favorite place to eat and drink, in my city? I love the sandwiches and beers of Peaky Road Pub.
What book influenced my life and how? “The dawn of the contemporary” by Renato Barilli, a book recommended by one of my professors. The book focuses on the painters’ psyche and how it affects their entire artistic life. It woke me up a new way of thinking about myself and about making art
You only die once. What music would I listen no my last day? Louis Armstrong-La vie en rose
Who is my hero or heroine in fiction? Sam (The lord of the rings)
Who are my heroes and heroines in real life? My parents
Which movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? Midnight in Paris. It has the right mix between imagination and romance. Who wouldn’t want to drink red wine with Salvador Dalí?
What role play stories in my life and work? Stories and imagination are essential for who works in the artistic field. To be honest, I create parallel worlds inside my mind. Sometimes I put them on paper, sometimes they stay in my mind.
What do the words “you are the storyteller of your own life” to me? I believe each one of us is the master of our destiny. Live presents endless possibilities, steps, but at the end of the game we’re the ones who choose our way. For example, some time ago I’ve had to decide between passions that are part of myself, but I hope to have chosen the right thing.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? Definitely my family that supports me financially. Then my partner and my best friend who love my projects.
Which people or companies would I like to work with in 2021? Basically I am a person who loves to work alone since for me art is something intimate. For my works I often take inspiration from the photos of Natgeo Wild.
Which people in my profession who can make a real difference in my creative career
would I love to meet in 2021?
I am amazed by Guillermo Lorca Garcia’s paintings. I love the way in which he represents animals and human elements together, as a part of something unique.
What project, in 2021, am i looking forward to work on? In september I started a new project based on the creation of animal portraits. I try to capture their strength and fragility. I hope this project opens some doors for me, even if I think there’s still a long way to go.
