Overspending is a problem if you have debt, no savings, want work less and have more life in your life, and are one bad month from bankrupcy. Ideally, you should be able to survive for six months or more wthout any income. With the up and down cycle of the creative live, it pays to be cost conscious and reduce living expenses so that during the lean times it is not as much of a struggle. It can become a vicious cycle if you have to make a large amount of money just to keep up. It may mean you need a real job to pay the bills which takes you away from what you really want to be doing, creating.
